Hackensack River Greenway Advisory Board

The Hackensack River Greenway Advisory Board's mission is to create, monitor maintenance on, and provide information to the pubic about, a 3.5 mile Hackensack River Greenway through Teaneck. The Greenway contains a pedestrian walkway and nature trail. Native vegetation is encouraged within the Greenway to protect and improve the Hackensack River by creating a natural, green buffer between Teaneck’s developed area and the river.

History

The idea of increasing recreational use of the Hackensack River has been around for a long time. In the 1970’s, a group of Teaneck residents began conceptualizing the idea of creating a greenway along the Hackensack River.  Several municipalities had already built sections of pathway and more were underway.  Teaneck's Hackensack River Greenway Advisory Board was established in 1995 to design and develop the Hackensack River Greenway through Teaneck. Friends of the Greenway, a non profit group of volunteers began in 2000 to provide guided walks, lectures, cleanups and maintenance of the trails.  Interpretive signs, developed by Prof. Rick Mills, have been installed at intervals along the Greenway, describing the flora, fauna and historic attractions of the area.

Today, the Greenway runs through 3 municipal parks and FDU campus in Teaneck.  Ultimately, the goal is for the Teaneck’s Greenway to be a continuous trail along the river, linking with pathways planned by immediately adjacent towns.
